Liquid Projects Background

Liquid Projects is a title for the activity of showing the possibilities of recycling glass.

The main protagonists/designers are Jon Lewis and Matt Durran.

We have created a fast melt, renewable energy powered glass furnace, which is both portable and cost efficient.

Our aim is to show through demonstration the effectiveness of melting recycled glass into sustainable design products with the added bonus of educating and entertaining the viewer in a way that makes them feel that recycling glass is not a wasted effort.

The furnace itself is a mixture of old and new technology using innovative design and breakthrough technology.

Having worked in the area of glass over a number of years, whether in creative, artistic or design arenas Jon and Matt have built up a vast knowledge and an international recognition for the projects they have been involved with.

There is a strong collaborative element within their work, working with fellow designers or teaching students, glass blowers or advising government organisations they work with the philosophy of “can do, let’s try”.

A good example of this is their involvement in the Liverpool European City of Culture 2008 where they took on the ‘Fast Glass Challenge’ an event in partnership with John Lewis, Liverpool. The challenge involved emptying bottles of beer, melting the bottles, blowing unique designs, packaging, displaying and selling the glass objects within 24 hours.

Other projects include: Nulife Glass prototypes, TV glass for a boat and recycled glass for London Fashion week.
