Matt Durran of Liquid Projects – Recycled TV glass into cast blocks
Charlotte Skene Catling of SCDLP Architects
Markus Bergstrom - Designer

Since commercial traffic on the canal systems effectively ceased in the 1970s the waterways have been busy with leisure boating, especially in the London area where people are converting canal boats to live on.

When we were asked to design a boat to be used as a home on Regents Canal, we started from the beginning rethinking everything that could improve the living environment and kept elements of the traditional design where it seemed rational. The structure is a mix between old and modern, hopefully far better suited for the current use of the London canals than the traditional narrow boat. Aesthetically the client’s profession as a filmmaker has been driving the design where light and movement is in focus. Recycled television screens were cast into angular blocks and used to form a multifaceted glazed strip along the gunnels, reflecting and animating images of the canal as the boat moves through the water.
